Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Prettify ("we", "our", "us", or "the Service") — the multi-format data viewer and editor for JSON, YAML, CSV, XML, and Mermaid available at prettify.tools and as a downloadable desktop app. Prettify is operated as a solo project. By using Prettify, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.

1. The Service

Prettify is a tool for viewing, editing, querying, and converting structured data files. The Service is offered in two tiers:

  • Free — described on the pricing page. You can use it indefinitely without paying.
  • Pro — a one-time payment of $19.99 USD that unlocks the Pro features described on the pricing page for the lifetime of the product (see § 4.3 for what "lifetime" means).

We may change feature availability between tiers from time to time. We won't take Pro features you've already paid for and put them behind a separate paywall.

2. License to use the Service

We grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service for your own personal or business purposes, subject to these Terms.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for anything illegal.
  • Resell, sublicense, or rent the Service.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code or any non-public component of the Service. (Open-source components included in the desktop app are governed by their own licenses — see the EULA.)
  • Probe, scan, or test for vulnerabilities without our written permission.
  • Use automated systems to scrape, copy, or interact with the Service in a way that interferes with its operation.
  • Submit content (in bug reports, share URLs, or anywhere else you can submit content) that is unlawful, harmful, or infringing.

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate this section.

4. Pro tier and payments

4.1 Pricing

Prettify Pro is a one-time payment of $19.99 USD. Pricing may change for new purchasers; we won't retroactively charge you more for a license you've already bought.

4.2 Merchant of Record

All Pro purchases are processed by Lemon Squeezy, our Merchant of Record. Lemon Squeezy handles payment processing, tax calculation and remittance, receipts, and chargebacks. Their terms and privacy policy apply to the checkout itself:

4.3 What "lifetime" means

"Lifetime" means the lifetime of the Service. We intend to keep Prettify online indefinitely, but we can't guarantee the Service will run forever. If we ever shut Prettify down, we'll give reasonable notice and, where feasible, provide a way for you to continue using the desktop app offline.

4.4 Refunds

We offer a 30-day, no-questions-asked refund. Email prettify.tools@gmail.com from the address you used at checkout, or contact Lemon Squeezy directly through your receipt email. After 30 days, refunds are at our discretion.

4.5 License key

Your Pro license key is yours personally. Don't share it publicly or with people who haven't paid. The desktop app's End User License Agreement allows you to activate one license on up to five (5) devices.

5. Your content

You own everything you load into Prettify. We don't claim any rights to your files, your documents, your queries, or anything else you bring to the Service.

The data you load into the editor stays on your device. Our Privacy Statement covers the limited cases where we receive content you submit (bug reports, Pro share URLs).

6. Our intellectual property

Prettify — including the website, the desktop app, the source code we have not open-sourced, the brand, and all content we publish — is owned by us. These Terms don't transfer any of our intellectual property to you.

7. Service availability and changes

We provide the Service on a best-effort basis. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. We'll try to give notice for material changes that affect Pro users.

8. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS. WE DO NOT WARRANT THE ACCURACY OF ANY DATA, OUTPUT, OR CONVERSION PRODUCED BY THE SERVICE.

You are responsible for backing up your own data. We recommend keeping copies of important documents outside Prettify.

9. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE TOTAL AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE LIABILITY (FOR PRO USERS, NORMALLY $19.99 OR LESS; FOR FREE USERS, $0).

WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, OR LOST BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY, EVEN IF WE'VE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

Some jurisdictions don't allow limits on implied warranties or liability for incidental damages, so some of these limits may not apply to you. In those jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by law.

10. Termination

You can stop using Prettify at any time.

We can suspend or terminate your access to the Service if you violate these Terms or if we reasonably believe your use poses a risk to other users or to the Service. If we terminate your Pro access for reasons other than your violation of these Terms, we'll refund the prorated unused portion of your purchase (which, given the lifetime nature of Pro, is at our reasonable discretion).

Sections 5, 6, 8, 9, and 11 survive termination.

11. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising out of or related to these Terms or the Service will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in California, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date and (where they affect Pro users) flagged in the app. Continuing to use the Service after the updated Terms take effect means you accept them.

13. Miscellaneous

  • Entire agreement. These Terms, together with the Privacy Statement and (for the desktop app) the EULA, are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service.
  • Severability. If any part of these Terms is held unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
  • No waiver. Our failure to enforce a provision isn't a waiver of our right to enforce it later.
  • Assignment. You can't assign your rights under these Terms without our written consent. We can assign ours in connection with a sale or transfer of the business.
